Paediatric First Aid

For people who have a specific responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community groups and activities, to provide first aid for children and infants, when dealing with an emergency situation.
This qualification fulfils Ofsted’s first aid requirements for early years teachers, nursery workers and child minders (as defined within the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage 2014 and within the Child Care Register guide)

Topics covered include:

• Understanding the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider
• How to assess an emergency situation safely
• Managing an unconscious infant or child
• Managing a child or infant who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
• Managing a child or infant who is choking
• First aid for a child or infant who is bleeding externally
• First aid for a child or infant suffering from shock
• Managing a child or infant suffering from anaphylaxis
• Fractures, sprains and strains
• Head and spinal injuries
• Conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose
• Chronic medical conditions including asthma, diabetes, meningitis, febrile convulsions
• Extreme heat and cold
• Electric shock
• Burns & scalds
• Poisoning
• Bites and stings

To renew this qualification, the candidate must complete a 6 hour refresher course which must have commenced prior to the date of expiry of the full certificate.

Certificate = 3 years
Duration = 12 hours
